Our Story

We've loved every minute of our journey

Viola’s Place Inc was established in 2018 as a New Jersey-based, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization in memory of Viola L. White. Ms.White was a pillar in her community in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for several years. She would house women and give back to her community as much as she could until her death in 1993. Ms. White’s daughter, Darlene Keith-Battle kept her legacy alive by becoming a foster and adoptive parent and by feeding the homeless in Camden, New Jersey.

One day, after feeding several adults, Darlene and her team were informed of a mother and her daughter that was sleeping under the local bridge. The team served the mother and her daughter a meal, provided them with gloves, hats and personal items. After having a conversation with the mother, they found out that she was running from her abusive husband and was living under the bridge for about 3 months. This mother, like many others, did not want to go seek assistance out of fear that her daughter would be taken away with her. After getting her into a shelter, we are happy to report that she and her daughter are doing great.

The need for shelters and safe housing for domestic violence victims and their children has grown due to the increase in cases of domestic and sexual assaults. Viola’s Place Inc. was created to cater to this growing demand. The goal of the organization is to provide safe and secure housing and skill training so that women become empowered, independent individuals.

What Is Domestic Violence?

Domestic violence is violence or other abuse by one person against another in a domestic setting, such as in marriage or cohabitation. It may be termed intimate partner violence when committed by a spouse or partner in an intimate relationship against the other and can take place in heterosexual or same-sex relationships, or between former spouses or partners.

Domestic violence can also involve violence against children, parents, or the elderly. It takes on many forms, including physical, verbal, emotional, economic, religious, reproductive, and sexual.

Sexual abuse can range from subtle, coercive forms to marital rape and violent physical abuse such as choking, beating, female genital mutilation, and acid throwing that results in disfigurement or death. Domestic murders include stoning, bride burning, honor killings, and dowry deaths.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide resources and assist in locating safe and secure shelter for women and their children,

so that they can become self-sufficient and live free from harm.

About Our Organization

We are a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization founded in 2018. Through the service of feeding the homeless in Camden, New Jersey, it was uncovered that some of the women were there because they was trying to escape from domestic violence and sex trafficking. When a problem presents itself, we believe that we are compelled to offer a solution.

Viola's Place Inc is a resource center that serves women and children who have suffered through domestic violence, NOT EXCLUDING EMOTIONAL, SEXUAL, FINANCIAL, OR PHYSICAL ABUSE. In collaboration with other community agencies and partnerships, Viola's Place Inc. helps to empower women, raise awareness, and educate the community and the greater public on domestic violence and its effects.

Domestic violence is a harsh reality faced by many women and children. It is a horrific crime; it is a violation of someone’s right to a safe and harmonious life. If you or someone you know is being abused in some way and need to start anew, turn to Viola's Place Inc. We believe that every woman and child should be able to live a life that flourishes, free from hurt, harm and fear. It is our duty to provide the tools and resources that are needed to not just live but to THRIVE!
